Belts are given at an event called a Batizado which happens once a year.
A person reciving their first belt/corda can genrally do so after having started capoeira up to a couple of months prior to the Batizado. For people moving up to a new belt is it known as their Troca de Corda (change of belt/cord).
Belts after the first one or awarded based on an individuals abillity and comitment, there are no formal exams although people may be asked to demonstrate their proficiency.
